⚠️ Carbon Monoxide is the #1 generator killer
  • NEVER run indoors — even briefly
  • NEVER run in a garage, even with the door open
  • Keep at least 20 feet from any opening
  • Install a CO detector on every floor
  • If CO alarm sounds: evacuate immediately, call 911

⚠️Where can I run the generator?

OUTDOORS ONLY. Place it at least 20 feet from any door, window, or vent. Never run inside a house, garage, shed, or any enclosed space — even with doors open. Carbon monoxide (CO) is invisible and odorless and kills within minutes.

How do I start the generator?

1. Place outdoors, at least 20 ft from openings. 2. Check oil level before starting. 3. Turn fuel valve to ON. 4. Set choke to CLOSED (cold start) or OPEN (warm). 5. Turn ignition switch to START or pull the recoil cord. 6. Once running, move choke to OPEN. 7. Let it warm up 2–3 minutes before plugging in appliances.

What can I plug in?

Check the wattage label on each appliance. Total running watts of connected appliances must stay below the generator's rated capacity (printed on the label, typically 3,500–5,500W for PGnE units). Priority order: medical equipment → refrigerator → lights → phone chargers. Do NOT plug in electric stoves, dryers, or central AC.

⚠️Can I plug it into a wall outlet?

NO. Plugging a generator into a wall outlet ('back-feeding') is illegal and deadly — it can electrocute utility workers restoring power. Only use extension cords or a properly installed transfer switch. Use heavy-duty outdoor-rated extension cords sized for your load.

⚠️How do I add fuel?

ALWAYS turn off the generator and let it cool for at least 2 minutes before adding fuel. Never add fuel while the engine is running or hot — gasoline vapors can ignite. Use fresh gasoline (less than 30 days old). Do not overfill — leave space for expansion.

How do I shut it down?

1. Unplug all appliances. 2. Turn the fuel valve to OFF. 3. Let the engine run until it stops from fuel starvation (this clears the carburetor). 4. Turn the ignition switch to OFF. If storing more than 30 days, run the carb dry or add fuel stabilizer.

The generator is running but there's no power — why?

Check that the circuit breaker on the generator panel is not tripped. If the load exceeded capacity, the breaker trips automatically. Unplug some appliances, wait 30 seconds, and reset the breaker by pressing it firmly. If it trips again immediately, reduce load further.

How long will a tank of fuel last?

At half-load, PGnE units typically run 8–12 hours on a full tank (~1 gallon/hour at full load, ~0.5 gal/hour at half load). Plan conservatively: run the generator in cycles (2–3 hrs on, 1 hr off) to extend fuel supply and reduce wear.

When do I return the generator?

Return by the date on your checkout form — or sooner if power is restored in your area. Return it with a roughly full fuel tank if possible. Drop off at any PGnE distribution site. Contact your site coordinator if you need an extension.

The generator is smoking or smells strange — what do I do?

Turn it off immediately. If you smell burning oil, check the oil level — low oil causes overheating and automatic shutdown on newer units. Do not restart until the problem is identified. Call your site coordinator's phone number (on your checkout receipt) for assistance.
